Taylor Swift was the top winner at the 2022 Video Music Awards, with three wins – video of the year, best long-form video and best direction, all for “All Too Well (10 Minute Version) (Taylor’s Version).” This year’s VMAs was held at Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. on Sunday (Aug. 28). Swift is the first artist to win video of the year three times. She previously won for “Bad Blood” (featuring Kendrick Lamar, 2015) and “You Need to Calm Down” (2019). This echoes Swift’s achievement at the Grammy ceremony in 2021 where Swift became the first female artist to win album of the year three times. But here, Swift is the first artist to achieve this feat period, with no gender qualifications necessary. With these three awards, Swift’s career tally of VMAs jumps to 14, which puts her in fourth place all time, behind Beyoncé (29), Madonna (20) and Lady Gaga (18). Yep, female solo artists are the top four winners of all time. Jack Harlow won four total awards, though that includes two technical categories. Lil Nas X and Harry Styles each collected three awards. Nicki Minaj, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Lisa of BLACKPINK each won two. The show included some genuine surprises, as when Lisa beat BTS for best K-pop and Anitta beat Bad Bunny for best Latin. LL Cool J, Minaj, and Harlow “anchored” the show. Minaj received the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. Red Hot Chili Peppers received the Global Icon Award. Both of these artists also won competitive awards. Here are some of the key records that were set at the 2022 VMAs. Taylor Swift “All Too Well (10 Minute Version) (Taylor’s Version)” is the first video that was directed by the artist without a credited collaborator to win video of the year. Four previous video of the year winners were co-directed by the artist with an outside collaborator – Missy Elliott’s “Work It” (with Dave Meyers), Kendrick Lamar’s “HUMBLE.” (with Meyers and Dave Free), Swift’s “You Need to Calm Down (with Drew Kirsch) and Lil Nas X’s “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)” (with Tanu Muino). Swift also won best long-form video for “All Too Well (10 Minute Version) (Taylor’s Version).” Swift is the third winner in this sporadically presented category. Madonna was the first, for “The Immaculate Collection” (1991), followed by Beyoncé for “Lemonade” (2016). Swift also won best direction for the second time, having previously won in the category two years ago for “The Man.” Swift is the second woman to win twice in the category, following Valerie Faris, who teamed with her husband, Jonathan Dayton, to direct Smashing Pumpkins’ “Tonight, Tonight,” the 1996 winner, and Red Hot Chili Peppers’ “Californication,” the 2000 winner. Swift is the second person to win best direction twice for work on their own videos. Lamar won for co-directing “Alright” (2015) and “HUMBLE.” (2017). Bad Bunny In a historic win, Bad Bunny was named artist of the year. It’s the first time a Latin artist has taken a marquee, all-genre award at the VMAs. His win over Drake, Ed Sheeran, Harry Styles, Jack Harlow, Lil Nas X and Lizzo was a surprise, but hardly a shock. Bad Bunny’s Un Verano Sin Ti logs its ninth week at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 this week, equaling the Encanto soundtrack for the longest run at No. 1 in 2022. Bad Bunny didn’t win best Latin. Anitta took that award. Remarkably, Bad Bunny has yet to win best Latin, despite four nominations in the past three years. He was nominated for “Mia” (featuring Drake, 2019), “Yo Perreo Sola” (2020), and “Dakiki (with Jhay Cortez, 2021) and “Un Dia (One Day)” (a collab with J Balvin, Dua Lipa and Tainy, 2021). Harry Styles The genial superstar won best pop for “As It Was.” As part of One Direction, Styles won best pop video 10 years ago for “What Makes You Beautiful.” Styles is the second artist to win in this category both as part of a group and as a solo act. Justin Timberlake, formerly of *NSYNC, was the first. *NSYNC won in the category with “Bye Bye Bye” (2000) and “Pop” (2001). JT won in 2003 for “Cry Me a River.” Styles was the first winner of album of the year for Harry’s House. His competition included two albums that he is almost certain to face again in the Grammy competition for album of the year – Adele’s 30 and Bad Bunny’s Un Verano Sin Ti. “As It Was” also took the award for best cinematography. Jack Harlow Harlow won four awards, three of which he shared with Lil Nas X. The two stars won best collaboration for “Industry Baby,” a No. 1 hit on the Hot 100. Surprisingly, this marks the first time that an all-male collab has won in this category, which was introduced in 2007. “Industry Baby” also won for best art direction and best visual effects. Harlow also took the award for song of summer for “First Class,” also a No. 1 hit on the Hot 100. Nicki Minaj Nicki Minaj won best hip-hop for “Do We Have a Problem?” (featuring Lil Baby) and also received the Video Vanguard Award. This is Minaj’s fourth win for best hip-hop, which allows her to pull ahead of Drake as the top winner in the category. Minaj first won in the category with “Super Bass” (2011) and repeated with “Anaconda” (2015) and “Chun-Li” (2018). This brings Minaj’s VMAs tally to seven, which allows her to pull ahead of Missy Elliott as the female rapper with the most wins. Elliott was the most recent Video Vanguard winner before Minaj. She received the honor in 2019. Red Hot Chili Peppers In addition to winning the Global Icon Award, the veteran band won best rock for the first time for “Black Summer.” They beat, among others, Foo Fighters, last year’s winner of the Global Icon Award. The Peppers’ awards bring their career tally of VMAs to 10. That puts them in a tie with Aerosmith and BTS for third place among groups. R.E.M. leads all groups with 12 awards, followed by Green Day with 11. Dove Cameron Cameron won best new artist, beating out Måneskin and SEVENTEEN. This is the fifth consecutive year that a female solo artist has won in this category. Cardi B won in 2018, followed by Billie Eilish, Doja Cat and Olivia Rodrigo. Three other acts were among the initial nominees, but they didn’t advance to the final three. They were Baby Keem, GAYE and Latto. This gives Cameron a helpful boost as Grammy season approaches. She is a top contender for best new artist at that show as well. BLACKPINK and Lisa Lisa, a member of BLACKPINK, won best K-pop for her solo hit “Lalisa.” She beat BTS, which had won in this category in each of the last three years with “Boy With Luv” (featuring Halsey), “On” and “Butter.” BLACKPINK won new best metaverse performance, for “The Virtual.” The category, newly added this year, is designed to honor virtual performances. It’s the all-female South Korean group’s second VMA. They won song of summer two years ago for “How You Like That.” MTV awarded an NFT (non-fungible token) to the winner in this category, partnering with Recur to develop the first-of-its-kind NFT eco-friendly minted companion award. BTS The K-pop sensations won best group for the fourth year in a row. This enables them to push ahead of No Doubt as the top winners in the category’s history. Note: The VMAs presented best group video every year from 1984, the first year of the awards, through 2007, but put the category on hiatus from 2008 through 2018. They brought it back in 2019, in large part due to BTS’ popularity. BTS’ award brings its career tally of VMAs to 10. The Weeknd The Weeknd took best R&B for the second time in three years for “Out of Time.” He previously won in 2020 for “Blinding Lights.” The Weeknd ties En Vogue, Destiny’s Child, Beyoncé and Alicia Keys as two-time winners in the category. (Wyclef Jean and Lauryn Hill are also two-time winners if you combine solo and Fugees releases.) Måneskin The Italian glam band won best alternative for “I Wanna Be Your Slave.” They are the first artist from outside the U.S. to win in this category, which was presented from 1991-98, but then went on hiatus until 2020. Måneskin beat Machine Gun Kelly, who won in the category the last two years. MGK was nominated this year for “emo girk,” featuring Willow. This is an important win for Måneskin, which has had a challenge emerging from the shadow of its huge U.S. breakthrough hit, “Beggin.'” Måneskin was also nominated for best new artist and group of the year. Billie Eilish Eilish won song of the year for “Happier Than Ever,” bringing her career VMAs tally to seven. This is Eilish’s first win for song of the year. She lost in the category with “Bad Guy” and “Everything I Wanted,” both of which went on to win the Grammy for song of the year. (“Happier Than Ever” was nominated in that category at the Grammys in April, but lost.) Eilish co-wrote all three songs with her brother and collaborator, Finneas. Anitta The Brazilian star won best Latin for “Envolver,” beating favorite Bad Bunny, nominated for “Titi Me Pregunto.” Anitta is the first Brazilian artist to win a VMA. Lizzo Lizzo won video of the year for her feel-good smash “About Damn Time.” It’s her first VMA. “About Damn Time” topped the Hot 100 for two weeks. SEVENTEEN The South Korean boy band won Push performance of the year. They had been the Push artist for December 2021 for their hit “Rock With You.” This is the group’s first VMA.
