Manchester United suffered a stunning 1-0 defeat at the hands of Real Sociedad in their opening group stage match of the Europa League. Despite not creating many clear-cut chances, United looked in complete control of the match for nearly the first hour before a controversial penalty decision saw Brais Mendez give the visitors the lead. It was David Silva's shot that hit Lisandro Martinez's thigh before deflecting onto his hand, as the former Manchester City man came back to haunt Old Trafford once more. Real Sociedad had barely threatened United's goal up until that point but after taking the lead, they grew into the match and enjoyed much more control during the final 30 minutes. The Spanish side earned their first win over English opposition in European competition at the seventh time of asking. The loss ends an impressive 18-match unbeaten streak for United at home in Europa League matches, their previous defeat coming a decade ago. United boss Erik ten Hag has a curiously rough home record in Europe as a manager, this result being his ninth loss in 21 home matches in major European competitions. (Photo: Getty Images)
